Do we need to write code to design a format?

No. Layouts are built by placing and styling elements. Template code is available for advanced cases, but nothing requires it.

Will it replace our existing print formats?

No. Each print format is either a designed one or a classic one, and you can keep both. Choose which to make the default for a document type.

Which documents can use it?

Any document type that can have a print format, in any product of the suite.
